Dear Niamh,

I feel behind! It seems like everyone is interviewing but I don’t see many job postings of interest to me. What am I doing wrong? Where should I be looking?

Dear Late Bloomer,

We hear from many students that they feel behind in their job searches. Don’t let that feeling drag you down!

Here’s a cheering tidbit of data: Over half of the positions posted on LionSHARE last year were posted in the spring. That’s 37,000+ new jobs and internships! In the spring!

Depending on your industries of interest, employers might not know their hiring needs or have posted jobs yet. Remember, not all industries and companies recruit in the fall or on campus. It is important to research the employers in your specific field of interest to see when and how they go about recruiting.

I encourage you to set up a meeting with a career counselor to create a job-search plan that fits your interests and goals. We can help you hone in on career interests and options, learn about industry timelines and practices, and develop a plan that will allow you to chip away at your search. If you’re interested in kick-starting your research in the meantime, you can always check out our industry pages to explore industries and related jobs.

We’re here for you, Late Bloomer, no matter where you are in your search.

- Niamh
