Updates on Finance Recruiting Cycle

In our last financial services-related post we shared what you needed to know in getting started to understand the recruiting landscape and the timeline for 2021 opportunities.

Below is our latest update for the upcoming 2022 recruiting cycle.

Recruiting is in full swing right now, as of June 2021.

Our Employer & Alumni Relations team, who work closely with our employer partners, has been hearing that over the next few weeks we will see postings for full-time and internship roles increase as the recruiting season heats up.

BULGE BRACKET AND LARGE FIRMS

For larger financial organizations, things are moving quickly! In past cycles, we see interviews take place during the start of the academic year (around the end of August and September). For roles starting in 2022, this timeline has shifted, and recruiting and interviewing will likely take place in the months of July and August with many applications opening by July 1, 2021. This trend is impacting timelines for internships but it is extending to some full-time opportunities as well, depending on the organization.

BOUTIQUE AND SMALLER FIRMS

For smaller financial firms, timelines have not shifted much. Many are planning to participate in on-campus interviews, likely taking place in early to late September for many full-time roles and some summer analyst positions. See last year’s timeline.

With all that said, what can you do now?

  • Create a target list of employers.

    • Get organized and keep track of deadlines or where you are in the search process. This tool will help!

  • ATTEND Info sessions or employer-led recruiting events.

    • These are happening now!  Attending is a great way to stay connected, build connections at the firms, and gain tips on the interview or application process.
    • Pay close attention to events on LionSHARE in addition to your targeted employer’s individual website.
  • Make LionSHARE work for you!

    • If you follow an employer in LionSHARE you will automatically get notified of upcoming events or jobs.

NOTE: Not every employer will post in our system, some may solely post on their own platform.

  • We encourage you to review the jobs/student careers page on their website for the most up-to-date information.
    • Some may have a campus recruiter or even a specific Columbia recruiter!

ADDITIONAL considerations

  • Apply sooner rather than later for any rolling deadlines to increase your chances.
  • Make sure your application materials (resume/cover letter) are updated and tailored to each position. We can help you do this in career counseling appointments
  • Interview preparation couldn’t hurt and get familiar with prescreening platforms.
