What is the Navab Fellowship Program?

The Navab Fellowship Program is made possible by the generosity of the Navab Family. The program enables Columbia College students to explore potential career paths, gain essential professional skills, and expand personal networks in preparation for life after graduation. Through the gracious commitment of Columbia College alumni, full-time Columbia College students will have the opportunity to apply to and secure exciting summer internships, in a variety of industries. Internships are predominantly based in New York, with some opportunities in other major cities in the United States and across the globe.

Highlights from Summer 2020

Here are some highlights of the employers and student reflections that participated in the program in the Summer of 2020! Hospital of Special Surgery hosted 5 students and connects students to dynamic research projects with professional supervision. Itzel Melgoza CC ‘22 shares, “I think that as an undergrad, you always want to find a research experience where you’ll do more than shadow or listen in on lab meetings. At HSS, I definitely felt that I was heavily involved in the project that I worked on this summer.  Along with my own PI, I felt that all of the other PIs involved with the Columbia Summer Scholars Program ensured that their students understood the larger implications of the work that they were doing. Understanding the bigger picture of my work and reflecting frequently on my experiences have helped me see that I will carry the skills I learned this summer into future research and internship opportunities.”

Project Rousseau is a non-profit organization that helps to empower students in their pursuit of higher education. Mae Bulter CC ‘22 reflects “The Navab Fellowship is an excellent opportunity to experience working at a small non-profit! Through the support of the fellowship and the dedication of my supervisors, I developed a wide range of skills and learned about some of the transformative work being done right here in NYC!”

In addition to experiences in the healthcare and non-profit industries, we had students in the financial space at Birch Grove Capital. Anna Kothuis CC ‘22 shared the effect of this internship on her career goals, “It really helped me realize that this is the field I want to go into when I’m older. My internship gave me the opportunity to learn a great deal about finance, and specifically how hedge funds work.”

We saw significant professional development in the Navab fellows throughout the summer as they were supported in their internships. In addition to their experience, they were supported by a career counselor and a CC alumni mentor during the fellowship program.  Curious about this program?
