As you gear up for your spring semester, feel free to pop into CCE to meet with a career counselor to reflect on your first semester at Columbia and to chat about your goals for your first summer.

During the summer after their first year, students typically pursue a variety of opportunities — from going home to work a summer job, to finding an internship, to doing research with a professor. No matter what you decide, each will require submitting a resume.
Check out our Resume 101 video to learn the basics of putting together a professional resume, attend the events in our Summer Planning Series for First-Years, and meet with a career counselor for further guidance.
Summer Planning for First Years Workshop Series
Come to John Jay Lounge to gain career insight and explore opportunities! Attend one or all four events:
- My First Summer Student Panel — Friday, January 25, 2019, 1:00 — 2: 30 p.m.
Hear from upperclassmen about what they did their first summer. Get tips on how to secure opportunities, fund your summer, and more!
- Where Do I Go From Here? Career Exploration for First-Years — Friday, February 1, 2019, 1:00 — 2:30 p.m.
Are you curious about what careers might be a fit for you? In this hands-on workshop, you’ll dissect your unique skills and interests and learn how they relate to possible industries and careers. You’ll leave with a better sense of career paths to further explore and ideas for what kind of summer opportunities meet your goals.
- So You Want an Internship? Search Strategies for First-Years — Friday, February 8, 2019, 1:00 — 2:30 p.m.
If you’re set on securing a summer internship, this workshop will give you the tools to strategize and plan your search. Learn how to develop a list of target organizations, navigate LionSHARE to find opportunities, and identify and leverage your connections (including Columbia alums) to create a summer internship!
- Resume Office Hours for First-Years — Friday, February 15, 2019, 1:00 — 2:30 p.m.
Work on your resume in a communal setting and get on the spot feedback from CCE staff, all from the comfort of your hall lounge. Also, get a free professional headshot that you can use for your LinkedIn or LionSHARE profile!
Columbia Exploration Externship (CEE)
The Columbia Exploration Externship (CEE) program offers Columbia first-year students unique opportunities to gain first-hand experience in fields of their interest. Alumni hosts from organizations throughout the New York City metro area will host externs during spring break week to expose them to their industries, companies, and careers. Learn more about how the program can help you connect with industry professionals, develop professional skills, and participate in a 3-4 day externship during Spring Break.
Program Dates: Spring Break 2019
- March 18-21: Externship
- March 22: Site Visit (optional)
- Deadline: February 3 to apply via LionSHARE
Summer Funding Programs
CCE administers a number of funding programs to students participating in unpaid or low-paid summer internships related to their career pursuits and/or academic studies. Learn more about the application process, application deadlines, and eligibility for our funding programs.
