Dear Niamh,

I don’t feel motivated in my job search but I feel the pressure to get started, how can I get the ball rolling?

-Unmotivated Roar-ee

Dear Roar-ee,

I’m glad you asked this question!  Per the National Association of College and Employers (NACE) 2019 Job Outlook Survey, employers plan to hire 16.6% more new graduates from the Class of 2019 than they did from the Class of 2018.  Also, in LionSHARE today (Jan. 15, 2019) there are 8,000+ full-time jobs posted.  Let these numbers lift you to read on for 3 tips to jump-start your search.

1.) REFLECT ON PAST SUCCESSES

A great motivator is to reflect on steps you’ve taken to reach accomplishments in the past. Are there certain strategies that worked for you? Who was around you? What time did you carve out for yourself? Ask yourself what energized you to work toward goals for student groups, class projects, or internships. Write a list of what worked for you and times your felt most motivated. Apply that reflection to your job search this spring.  We can do this work together in a career counseling appointment too.

2.) DON’T GO AT IT ALONE

Many, many seniors will be looking for full-time opportunities in the spring (although you may think that everyone has secured a job!).  The NACE 2019 Job Outlook survey found that only 20% of employers were recruiting in the fall. Most companies find talent through need-based hiring filling vacancies as they open throughout the year.  Many employers target seniors in the spring closer to graduation.  A great motivator to stay positive is to surround yourself with people who you can talk with about your job search and who will hold you accountable to apply for jobs, follow up, etc. Look to this group when you feel overwhelmed or stuck in your search.

3.) COME TO CCE TO CREATE A STRATEGY WITH MILESTONES

It’s a great time to come to CCE! We can (and want to) be part of your team and we’ve got the tools to help you create a manageable plan with milestones to keep you going! Start your semester by meeting with a career counselor. Schedule an appointment in LionSHARE today and let’s get that ball rolling, Roar-ee!
