What your Interfolio account provides

The Center for Career Education offers online dossier or credentials file services through a partnership with Interfolio, Inc. Highlights of the service include many features frequently requested by student and alumni dossier file users:

  • One-day service on all file send requests
  • Complete online management of reference letter files
  • Online storage of other application documents: e.g., CVs, writing samples, cover letters

Interfolio.com manages the operation of the dossier file service and stores dossier contents, while Center for Career Education staff provide counseling and guidance on how to obtain reference letters and prepare effective applications. The Center also provides on-line and in-person support for the dossier service.

A reference file account with Interfolio.com includes 5 MB of document storage space, which is typically enough to hold 100 typed pages. Additional space can be purchased. Interfolio.com structures its fees in two ways: a file holder first arranges to open a file account in one-year increments, and subsequently each time a file holder requests that the file be sent, a processing fee is assessed.

What can go into your Dossier file

Interfolio's internet-based service allows you to build a complete file of all your professional credentials where you can store your critical documents in a secure system, including:

  • Confidential letters of recommendation
  • Curriculum Vitae(CV)/resumes
  • Writing samples
  • Dissertation abstracts
  • Teaching evaluations
  • Transcripts
  • Anything else you may need for your job search.

Creating a new Interfolio account

NEW USERS: New dossier service users can register for a new Interfolio account (www.Interfolio.com) at any time. Creating a new Interfolio account is simple. The annual account registration and maintenance fee of $15 per year is required. For more information, please visit the Interfolio web site.

Please make sure to select "Columbia University - Dossier Service, Center for Career Education" as your "affiliation" on the Interfolio registration page. For immediate questions or concerns, please contact dossierservice@columbia.edu.

PREDECESSOR DOSSIER SERVICE USERS: Dossier Service users who held online accounts with the predecessor Center for Career Education Dossier Service have been advised via email (to their address of record) that they should NOT register independently to open new accounts with Interfolio. Columbia's Center for Career Education has already done so on their behalf and their letters of recommendation on record have been added to this Interfolio account. Interfolio notified Columbia's predecessor Dossier Service account holders by e-mail that their new Interfolio account was created and ready for activation. If you held an account with the previous Dossier Service but have not received your new login information, it may be because it was sent to an outdated email address that was not updated. Please email dossierservice@columbia.edu for your login credentials.

Conversion to Interfolio

Predecessor On-Line Dossier Service Users

Predecessor online Columbia University Dossier Service accounts were electronically transferred to new Interfolio accounts at the beginning of the Fall 2007 academic semester. Nothing in the dossiers was altered by this transfer.

  • Active Account holders who registered for the predecessor Dossier Service and sent an online dossier file after July 1, 2006 do NOT need to pay an initial Interfolio registration fee through August 2008. Active Account holders are responsible for any expenses incurred in distributing their dossier's contents to schools or employers as required with the previous system. In addition, users will pay an annual registration fee of $15 in succeeding years, which is lower than the previous annual registration fee of $30 for enrolled students or $60 for alumni.
  • Inactive Account holders are those individuals who registered for the predecessor Dossier Service or sent an online dossier file before July 1, 2006 but were inactive after that date. If Inactive Account holders choose to activate and use their new Interfolio account they will need to pay the annual registration fee just as they would have with the previous Dossier Service - only at the new, reduced fee of $15. Users will be responsible for expenses incurred in distributing their dossier's contents to schools or employers (as with the previous system) and for the annual registration fee of $15 in succeeding years (if they choose to use the service).

Interfolio e-mailed Dossier Service users directly when new accounts were created. This email included log-in credentials necessary for account activation. Once activated, accounts were fully functional with recommendation letters from the previous online account. As noted, if you did not receive your log-in credentials it is because you did not update your email address with the Dossier Service. For log-in information, please contact dossierservice@columbia.edu.

Legacy Dossier Service Users

  • Legacy Dossier Service Users are those users who have a paper dossier file but never created an electronic file with the predecessor online system. Legacy Dossier Service users need to register for a new Interfolio account only if they plan to utilize the Dossier Service. Please contact Columbia's Center for Career Education at dossierservice@columbia.edu upon creating a new Interfolio file. On registration, Columbia can upload existing paper letters to the user's new Interfolio account. Please be advised, however, that physical letters filed with the Center for Career Education prior to the adoption of the online system may be dated and/or fragile. You may as a result, want to consider requesting new letters of recommendation.
